Google has released its annual list of the most searched keywords, reflecting the hottest topics people cared about throughout the year and revealing the themes driving search trends. These lists are not only interesting but also offer valuable insights for future marketing efforts.

First, Google’s rankings cover either “global” searches or searches from specific regions, showcasing the most talked-about events and figures of 2024. While most trends fall within expectations, some interesting details emerge, such as the relative popularity of sports in global search compared to the volume of searches for politicians in the “People” category. Notably, India—where cricket is treated almost like a religion—likely contributed to the high search volume for cricket-related topics, yet no individual cricket players made it into the top five of the “People” list.

The spike in searches for musician Diddy was clearly not due to his music. In addition, Google also published trending lists for categories such as “Sports” and “Gaming.”

It’s also worth noting that Google released, for the first time, the top “Hum to Search” songs of 2024. Google introduced its hum-to-search feature in 2020, and it now appears to be increasingly popular, revealing the “earworms” that puzzled people most this year.

Climate change also had a significant presence in the “News” rankings. Google furthermore provided an overview of entertainment trends, including songs, movies, and TV shows.

Google noted: “This year, people searched in new ways. When using Lens and Circle to Search, the most common use cases were translation, shopping, and object recognition. Meanwhile, users combined the phrase ‘how to use’ with visual search, leveraging multimodal technology that integrates text and images to gain deeper understanding.”

Although Google’s official data showed that voice search accounted for 20% of searches on the Google App in 2016, the company has not released usage statistics for voice search since then. The information in this report offers new insights into the actual adoption and usage rates of alternative search methods such as voice search.

The 2024 search trends also include regional breakdowns and specific data for U.S. users, covering insights from 200 metropolitan areas across the United States.

This trend report serves as a kind of time capsule, capturing the interests and concerns of people over the past year. Over time, these Google rankings will become a powerful tool for tracking hot topics and social change.
